Without those, there is some risk of the terrain getting squished as the upper box slowly sinks lower and lower under gravity's pull. They are higher than the insert was, so you will get more height down there than you had before. If you take it out, I have included corner pieces for the bottom box to hold up the upper box. Our group never used that box as a dice tray anyway, so I prefered freeing up the space. You can keep the insert for the bottom box if you like, though it gets tighter then.
